Our journey towards decarbonization

Since 2006, Davines has undertaken a path of reduction and compensation of CO2eq emissions. We're happy to share our milestones with you.

Road to Net Zero 

Since 2018 Davines is a Carbon Neutral Company. But we pledged to go beyond: in 2019, we committed to become  Net Zero emissions by 2030, joining the efforts with other 800 B Corps in the world. 

To be Net Zero, Davines will also have to tackle the  emissions indirectly related to its products.  In there your support is crucial, because the  use phase - in salon and at home- is the biggest source of indirect emissions for haircare and beardcare.

What does Carbon Neutrality means?

Davines is a Carbon Neutra company because it achieved a state of balance between emissions produced and emissions avoided and/or removed from the atmosphere. Indeed, Davines monitors, reduces and offsetsall the emissions directly related to its activity: offices, production, energy used in the buildings and company vehicles (technically called scope 1 and 2).

However, according to latest scientific definitions, a commitment to carbon neutrality does not necessariliy require two aspects that for Davines are crucial and that we already started started tackling:

  1. Taking responsibility also of the emssions that are not under our direct control (scope 3) - for instance, Davines already monitors, reduces and compensates 100% of the emissions deriving from packaging life cycle. And that's already beyond what a committment towards Carbon Neutrality implies.
  2. Reducing overall GHG emissions, to limit global warming to 1.5° C - a carbon-neutral business is encouraged to reduce its emissions, but without setting a specific target

What does Net Zero emissions means?

In 2019, we decided to commit to be Net Zero by 2030.This target involves: 

  1. Measuring and monitoring all emissions (direct and indirect) - Scope 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Drastically reducing our GHG emissions, according to the 1.5° C trajectory  - Giving our contribution to limit global warming up to 1.5° C over pre-industrial levels, whereas todays predictions go up to 2° C by 2100. To cut the indirect emissions related to the use phase of our products, we need the help of all our hairdressers and final clients. 
  3. Neutralizing the remaining emissions by removing an equal amount from the atmosphere - With regenerative and circular projects.

Choose  a green energy supplier

One of the main ways to fight climate change is to choose renewable energy sources, from which very little or no CO2eq is emitted. Nowadays, most suppliers offer sustainable options: re-check your contract and make sure it includes only solar, wind, biomass or hydro energy.

Reduce the amount of energy you use

When taking care of hair beauty- at home or in salon - please be conscious of the quantity of energy in use! Most of the CO2eq emissions related to haircare prodcuts come from the heating of the water. But also from hairdryers or other styling tools.

5 tips to create more sustainable haircare habits

Once a Davines product enters your bathroom or your salon, you too can continue the journey of reducing emissions by changing your habits in the use phase to make them more virtuous. That's how.

  1. Opt for a cooler water temperature: warm, but not boiling hot.
  2. Shut off the water while you massage the shampoo, the conditioner or the treatment.
  3. Turn the running water on only to rinse, then shut it off immediately. We know that shampoo is also a moment of relax for you; but if it is too long, it can cause stress on the Planet 😊.
  4. Use the hairdryer at the lowest possible temperature. Or simply: leave the hair air dry.
  5. Remember to unhook the hairdryer, the hair straightener or the curling iron immediately after use. A plugged in tool uses power even when it is turned off.

All the things you've always wanted to know about CO2, and never dared to ask

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and COeq

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a climate-altering gas that naturally occurs in our atmosphere; its very high concentration contributes to global warming. However, CO2 is not the only gas responsible for the greenhouse effect, which is also caused, for example, by nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) describes the impact of greenhouse gases in a single unit. For any quantity and type of greenhouse gas, CO2eq indicates the amount of CO2 that would have an equivalent impact on global warming

Carbon footprint

A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases— primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) —released into the atmosphere by a particular human activity. When referred to a company (company carbon footprint), it indicates the total amount of carbon emissions being produced by all of the company's activities. It includes direct emissions, such as those that result from fossil-fuel combustion in manufacturing, heating, transportation, and indirect emissions associated with the production of electricity.

Global warming

Global warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature. Though this warming trend has been going on for a long time, its pace has significantly increased in the last hundred years due to the burning of fossil fuels.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs)

Greenhouse gases are the cause of the greenhouse effect. Although many of them are found in nature, many others are synthetic. Let's have a closer look at some of the greenhouse gases:

  1. Carbon dioxide (CO2): It's the most emitted GHG by quantity: in 2014, it accounted for 76% ca. of the total GHG emissions. CO2 enters the atmosphere through combustion (burning fossil fuels, solid waste, trees and other biological material) and as a result of specific chemical reactions. It is also released by natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions. In 2014, the sectors which emitted the most CO2 emissions have been electricity and heat production (49,09%), transport (20,45%), manufacturing industries & construction (19,96%). However, residential buildings & commercial and public services accounted for 8,80% of the total: all of us have a role in fighting climate change.
  2. Methane (CH4): is mainly emitted by livestock and agricultural practices, such as ruminant digestion and manure management; it is also emitted by the production and transport of coal, natural gas and oil. Fugitive emissions of methane also result from the decay of organic waste in solid waste landfills.
  3. Nitrous Oxide (N2O): is emitted by agricultural and industrial activities such as fertilizer use, combustion of fossil fuels and solid waste; N2O is also emitted through the treatment of wastewater.
  4. Hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs), Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and Nitrogen Trifluoride (NF3): are emitted from industrial processes and, although usually emitted in small quantities, their global warming potential* is incredibly high. Contrary to CO2, CH4 and N2O, which are available in nature, this last family of greenhouse gases are synthetic gases used in a variety of different industrial activities. HFCs, for example, are used in refrigeration and are present in most of the air condition units worldwide.

Renewable energy

One of the main ways to fight climate change is to increase renewable energy use, from which very little or no CO2eq is emitted. Renewable energy is energy (electricity or heat) produced by energy sources that are replenished quicker or at the same pace than they are consumed. The most common renewable energy sources are:

  1. Solar energy(from the Sun hitting solar panels or thermosolar equipment)
  2. Wind energy (from the wind blowing on wind turbines)
  3. Hydro energy (from the water movement through turbines)
  4. Biomass energy(from biomass combustion)

In Davines, we use both electricity and heat from renewable sources. Part of it is produced on-site, while the rest is purchased. The Davines Villages is equipped with solar panels and a geothermal system.
