Naturally textured hair varies in curl pattern, porosity and density. We wanted to share how to style it while respecting and enhancing its natural volume and texture. Offer you some pro-tips to care for textured hair at home, to keep it healthy and naturally beautiful.

Textured Hair: What Is Its Structure & Why Is It So Delicate?

On a scale from 1 to 10 - where 1 is absolute straight hair and 10 is the most extreme curl – kinky hair stands between 8 and 10. Its structure is very peculiar and fragile:kinky hair is generally flat and it coils on itself in a very tight spiral, almost like a “Z”.

When frequently straightened – with chemical treatments or with hair dryers and hair straighteners – kinky or textured hair can be more prone to damage and breakage. When, however, it is left in its natural state, it can dehydrate and become frizzer as a result and might even lose texture, becoming even trickier to detangle.

So, what can you do? First of all, you should love its nature! Rather than fight it, by choosing the right product designed for a restoring hydration and helping de-frizz.

Products For Naturally Textured Hair

Put 2/3 spoonful of Replenishing Butter in a small bowl
Add up to 10 spurts of OI Oil and mix to blend together both textures
Apply to wet hair, making sure to cover the whole head
Dry with the diffuseron a medium temperature, to avoid stressing the hair
Complete the look with a bandana, for a little creativity!

Style icons: from Angela Davis’ revolution to disco music

Up until the 50s, African American women were encouraged to straighten their hair to comply with the standards of beauty of the time.

But then a few jazz singers started to rebel and embrace wearing their hair naturally curly. Finally, during the 60s the time was right for a proper revolution of traditions.

And that’s when Angela Daviscomes into play: she was one of the most important activists of the civil right Movement for women and African Americans in the United States.

Her naturally curly 'do became a symbol of liberation, a statement for a new standard of beauty, far from the imposed ones, and a desire of self-assertion.

After a long period of political commitment, the 70s brought forward a real hunger for liberation, not just of the minds - but also of the body and movement. Disco music marks the beginning of a period of fun, funk and iconic style.

An icon of this period is Diana Ross. First as the lead singer of The Supremes, then as a solo artist with unforgettable songs like “Upside down” and “Ain't no mountain high enough”. Her natural curly hair has been associated with disco music, but it also meant independence and a strong personality.
